Biggest wins of the round: Villa, Liverpool and Barcelona run riot

Aston Villa 6-0 Fenerbahçe was the most emphatic result of the week. Villa were already 3-0 up at half-time at Villa Park and doubled that after the break, a performance that lifts the Birmingham club to third with a goal difference of +7. For Fenerbahçe, the defeat leaves them 28th with one point and a goal difference of -6.

Lask Linz 3-6 Liverpool was the highest-scoring match of the round. Liverpool led 3-0 at the interval in Austria; the second half finished 3-3, but the English side's six goals secured a second straight win and fifth place. Lask, still without a point, sit 33rd.

Galatasaray 1-4 Barcelona was level at 1-1 at half-time in Istanbul before Barcelona pulled clear with three second-half goals. The Catalans are second on six points with nine scored and two conceded, while Galatasaray are 35th after two defeats.

Elsewhere, Arsenal beat Lille 3-0 after a goalless first half and remain the only side in the competition yet to concede, with a 4-0 aggregate after two games. VfB Stuttgart won 3-0 at Slovan Bratislava to go fourth, and Villarreal beat Napoli 3-1, leaving the Italian club pointless in 32nd.

Upsets and statement results in the Champions League

PSG win at the Etihad

The tie of the round was Manchester City 2-4 Paris Saint-Germain. The visitors were 3-0 up by half-time in Manchester, and although City responded after the break, PSG held on to stay perfect. With ten goals scored and three conceded, the Parisians sit top of the table. City fall to 17th on three points.

Brugge silence San Siro

Inter 3-4 Club Brugge was the biggest shock based on table positions. It was 1-1 at the break before a frantic second half produced five more goals, with Brugge winning that half 3-2. Inter have now lost both games and sit 29th with no points, while Brugge move to 16th.

Viking hold Bayern, Bodø/Glimt beat Dortmund

Norwegian football had a memorable night. Viking led Bayern München 2-0 at half-time in Stavanger and the match finished 3-3, Viking's first point of the campaign. Bayern are tenth on four points. A day later Bodø/Glimt beat Borussia Dortmund 1-0, with the goal coming after a goalless first half. Malaysian side Sabah FA also won, beating Slavia Praha 2-0 in a match played in Baku.

Narrow wins and late drama

AS Roma 3-4 Real Madrid was another seven-goal game, level at 1-1 at the interval before Madrid won the second half 3-2. Real Betis 3-2 FC Porto was goalless at half-time before five second-half goals, and Feyenoord 3-2 Como was also a five-goal game. Atletico Madrid beat Manchester United 2-0, Sporting CP won 2-0 at Lens, Shakhtar Donetsk beat AEK Athens 3-1 and RB Leipzig edged PSV Eindhoven 1-0.

Champions League standings: who is on course for the last 16?

Under the league-phase format, the standings descriptions show that the top eight qualify directly for the round of 16, teams from ninth to 24th go into the knockout play-off round, and clubs from 25th down to 36th are currently outside the qualification places. After two rounds, the top of the table looks like this:

6Sporting CP2200+46
7Arsenal2200+46

  • Just outside: Real Betis also have six points and the same goal record as Real Madrid (6-4), but sit ninth on the remaining tiebreakers, in the knockout play-off zone along with Bayern and Shakhtar on four points.
  • The cut-off at 24th: Bodø/Glimt hold the last play-off place on three points. AS Roma (25th) are first outside the qualification places on one point, alongside PSV, Viking and Fenerbahçe.
  • Still pointless: Inter, FC Porto, Slavia Praha, Napoli, Lask Linz, Lille, Galatasaray and Slovan Bratislava (bottom with a goal difference of -8).

Champions League top scorers: a five-way tie on four goals

The scoring chart is unusually crowded, with five players on four goals. The figures cover appearances across this season's competition, which explains why some totals come from more games than the two league-phase rounds.

Nicolò Tresoldi has four for Club Brugge, two of them penalties, in 173 minutes. Joy-Lance Mickels of Sabah FA leads the list on four goals and one assist across ten appearances, and Talisca has four for Fenerbahçe, including two penalties.

What's next in the Champions League

The next round of league-phase fixtures begins on Tuesday 20 October 2026. With nine teams on maximum points, the race for the top eight is already tight, and the result between the leading pack and the chasers will start to separate the field. Clubs such as Inter, Napoli and Porto, still without a point, have little margin left before the knockout play-off line at 24th drifts away from them.
