West Ham United produced the result of the week in the Championship, hammering Lincoln City 6-0 at Sincil Bank, while leaders Swansea City edged Millwall 1-0 to stay two points clear of Middlesbrough at the top after Matchday 10. This Championship results round-up covers all twelve midweek games played on 13 and 14 October 2026 and Friday night's Matchday 11 opener, in which Wolves won 2-1 at Burnley, and breaks down the promotion race, the play-off picture, the relegation zone and the early fight for the Golden Boot.

Championship results: Matchday 10 and Friday's opener

The 13 matches in this round-up produced 48 goals, an average of almost 3.7 per game. Away teams had the upper hand, winning eight times against four home wins and a single draw, Burnley's 2-2 with Charlton at Turf Moor.

Beyond West Ham's rout, the biggest scorelines came from Cardiff City, who were 4-0 up at half-time on the way to a 5-1 win over Watford, from Birmingham City, 4-0 winners over Preston after leading 3-0 at the break, and from QPR, who beat Derby County 4-1 after another 3-0 first half. Middlesbrough scored three times after a goalless first half to win 3-2 at Stoke City, and Bolton won 3-1 at Molineux. On Friday night, Wolves turned the tables at Turf Moor, coming from 1-1 at the interval to beat Burnley 2-1.

Championship table: Swansea lead the promotion race

Swansea City are the early pace-setters with 23 points from ten matches: seven wins, two draws and only one defeat, with the best defence in the division (seven goals conceded). The 1-0 win at The Den was their fourth in a row, following a single loss earlier in their last five. Middlesbrough are second on 21, unbeaten in their last five (W-W-D-D-W), and boast the league's top scorer. Note that the standings below were last updated before Friday's game at Turf Moor.

The automatic promotion places belong to the top two, but the chasing pack is close. West Ham are third on 19 points and have by far the best attack in the league with 29 goals, plus a +17 goal difference that is six better than anyone else. Behind them, Birmingham, QPR and West Brom are all on 17 points.

The play-off picture

The table flags third to eighth as play-off positions this season, with third and fourth heading into the semi-finals and fifth to eighth into a quarter-final round. On that basis, West Ham and Birmingham currently hold the semi-final spots, with QPR, West Brom, Southampton and Stoke City in the quarter-final places. Blackburn Rovers are one point outside in ninth after winning 1-0 at Bristol City, and Wolves' Friday win at Burnley will lift them from 14 to 17 points once the table is updated, enough to put them right among the play-off contenders.

Southampton's position deserves a closer look. Six wins and two draws would normally be worth 20 points, but they are credited with 16. That matches the four-point deduction for 2026-27 that an EFL disciplinary commission ordered in May after the club was found to have spied on Middlesbrough's training before last season's play-off semi-final, as reported by ESPN. Without it, Saints would be second. Their 1-0 win at Norwich keeps them firmly in the mix regardless.

Form teams in the Championship

Using the last-five sequences from the standings (most recent result first):

  • Swansea City - W-W-W-W-L: four straight wins since their only defeat of the run.
  • Southampton - W-W-L-W-W: four wins in five, deduction or not.
  • Middlesbrough - W-W-D-D-W: unbeaten in five, with 11 points out of 15.
  • West Ham - W-D-D-W-W: unbeaten in five and scoring freely.
  • Norwich City - L-L-L-L-W: four consecutive defeats after the 1-0 home loss to Southampton.
  • Preston North End - L-L-D-L-L: one point from the last 15 available.

Relegation zone: Preston, Derby and Watford in trouble

At the bottom, Preston North End have just four points from ten games and the 4-0 defeat at St. Andrew's left them with a goal difference of -12, the worst in the league. Derby County are 23rd on six points after losing 4-1 at Loftus Road, and Watford sit 22nd on eight points following the 5-1 thrashing in Cardiff. Burnley, relegated from the Premier League last season, are only above Watford on goal difference and the Friday loss to Wolves means they stay on eight points from 11 games. Norwich (9) and Cardiff (10) are only just clear. Lincoln City, despite the 6-0 defeat, remain 18th on 11 points.

Championship top scorers

Middlesbrough striker Will Lankshear leads the scoring chart with eight goals in ten appearances, none from the penalty spot. Southampton's Cyle Larin has seven in 690 minutes, roughly one every 99 minutes, and West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen has six goals and five assists, the most goal involvements of anyone in the top five.

West Ham are the only club with two players in the top five, with defender Konstantinos Mavropanos on five goals, a remarkable tally for a centre-back. Norwich's 21-year-old Mohamed Touré has also scored five in just seven appearances and 456 minutes, a strike every 91 minutes and the best ratio in the top five.

What's next in the Championship

The rest of Matchday 11 takes place this weekend, with the first Saturday game kicking off at 11:30 GMT.
