League tables explained: points, goal difference and tie-breakers
Two teams level on points does not mean the same thing in every league. How the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A and the Bundesliga separate them.
A league table looks simple: three points for a win, one for a draw, none for a defeat. The interesting part starts when two or more teams finish on the same number of points — and here Europe's major leagues do not all follow the same rules.
The columns in a standings table
| Column | Meaning |
|---|---|
| P | Matches played |
| W / D / L | Wins, draws and losses |
| GD | Goal difference: goals scored minus goals conceded |
| Pts | Points |
| Form | Results of the most recent matches, newest last |
Coloured position markers show what a place is worth at the end of the season — for example qualification for European competition or relegation. Hover or tap a position on Yalla Shoot to see the description supplied with the table.
Goal difference first: England and Germany
In the Premier League, teams level on points are separated by overall goal difference, then by goals scored. Head-to-head results only come into play further down the list. The Bundesliga also starts with goal difference and goals scored.
Head-to-head first: Spain and Italy
La Liga looks first at the matches between the tied teams: points earned in those games, then goal difference in them. Overall goal difference is only used if the head-to-head record cannot separate the sides. Since the 2022–23 season Serie A has also used head-to-head results as the first tie-breaker, with a play-off reserved for ties that decide the title or relegation.
That is why a team can sit above a rival with a worse goal difference in Spain or Italy — something that would not happen in England.
Why the table can look wrong mid-season
While head-to-head rules apply, the order between level teams may change once the second meeting between them has been played. Postponed matches also mean some teams have played fewer games, so always check the P column before comparing positions.
