Younes Ebnoutalib scored the only goal as Eintracht Frankfurt beat 1. FC Köln 1-0 at the Deutsche Bank Park on Friday night, 16 October 2026, in Bundesliga matchday 6 with a much-needed home win. The striker turned in substitute Noel Aseko's pass in the 77th minute, six minutes after Aseko had come on, to settle a tense contest in which Frankfurt carried more threat throughout. The three points lift the hosts above their visitors in the table and give them a welcome clean sheet after a leaky start to the season. Here is our full match report.

Eintracht Frankfurt vs Köln match report: patience rewarded

Frankfurt coach Hütter lined his side up in a 4-4-2. Atubolu started in goal behind Nnamdi Collins, Robin Koch, Lilian Brassier and Kosugi across the back four. Ritsu Doan, Onyedika, Mario Götze and Farès Chaïbi formed the midfield four, and Jonathan Burkardt partnered Ebnoutalib in attack. Köln coach René Wagner opted for a five-man defence in a 5-3-2: Schwäbe in goal, Sebulonsen, Schmied, Jahmai Simpson-Pusey, Lochoshvili and Borna Sosa at the back, Ísak Bergmann Jóhannesson, Krauß and Linton Maina in midfield, with Bülter and Said El Mala up front.

The first half was a physical, stop-start affair. Referee Benjamin Brand booked Götze for a foul on 24 minutes and Brassier on 39, before Jóhannesson went into the book for Köln in the 45th minute. Frankfurt had more of the ball and more corners but could not find a way past a deep, well-organised Köln block, and the teams went in level at 0-0.

Key moments: how Ebnoutalib won it

  • 24' – Yellow card: Mario Götze (Frankfurt), foul.
  • 39' – Yellow card: Lilian Brassier (Frankfurt), foul.
  • 45' – Yellow card: Ísak Bergmann Jóhannesson (Köln), foul.
  • 68' – Köln triple change: Paul Okon-Engstler for Jóhannesson, Mikey Moore for Linton Maina, Alessio Castro-Montes for Joel Schmied.
  • 71' – Frankfurt respond: Noel Aseko replaces Götze, Ansgar Knauff replaces Nnamdi Collins.
  • 77' – GOAL, Frankfurt 1-0: Younes Ebnoutalib, assisted by Noel Aseko.
  • 82' – Elias Baum replaces Jonathan Burkardt (Frankfurt).
  • 84' – Köln go for broke: Reigan Heskey on for Said El Mala, Luca Waldschmidt on for Sebastian Sebulonsen.
  • 90+4' – Yellow card: Borna Sosa (Köln), foul.

Hütter's changes proved decisive. Replacing the booked Götze with Aseko and bringing on Knauff for extra width added energy at exactly the right moment, and Aseko's assist six minutes later rewarded the decision. Köln's late attacking substitutions, including Heskey and Waldschmidt, produced pressure but no clear equaliser.

Frankfurt nearly doubled Köln's expected goals (1.31 to 0.67) and put seven shots on target against three. Schwäbe made six saves for Köln and kept his side alive for long periods, while Atubolu had a quieter night with three stops. The foul count is telling: Köln committed 17 fouls to Frankfurt's eight, a sign of how often Wagner's side had to stop Frankfurt's attacks illegally once their shape was stretched. Each team collected two yellow cards in the match events.

Tactical analysis: 4-4-2 against Köln's back five

Wagner's 5-3-2 was built to deny space between the lines and to spring El Mala and Bülter on the counter. For an hour it largely worked: Frankfurt had territory but few clear openings, and Köln's wing-backs Sebulonsen and Sosa pinned Frankfurt's full-backs at times. The problem for Köln was that their three-man midfield struggled to keep the ball, completing only 266 passes, which meant long spells without relief.

Frankfurt's two-striker system gave them a constant presence against Köln's three centre-backs, and Burkardt's work alongside Ebnoutalib dragged defenders out of position. Once Köln made their triple change on 68 minutes, the defensive structure briefly lost its cohesion, and Frankfurt struck within ten minutes. Hütter then shored things up by replacing Burkardt with Baum, protecting the lead through the final stages without conceding a clear chance.

Bundesliga table: Frankfurt leapfrog Köln

Before kick-off, Eintracht Frankfurt were 14th in the Bundesliga with five points from five matches (one win, two draws, two defeats) and a troubling goal record of 9-16. This win takes them to eight points from six games and moves them above Köln on points, while the clean sheet is significant for a defence that had been conceding more than three goals per game on average.

1. FC Köln started the round tenth with seven points from five games (two wins, one draw, two defeats, goals 8-10). They stay on seven points after six matches and will be looking over their shoulder as the rest of the round plays out.

Frankfurt vs Köln head-to-head

Köln's last win in the fixture in the data came in February 2024, 2-0 at home.

What's next for Frankfurt and Köln

Frankfurt will hope this gritty victory becomes a turning point, with the defensive solidity shown here the base for a climb up the table. Köln, meanwhile, need to find more control in possession to make their compact system pay. Follow matchday 7 fixtures on our matches page.
