Holstein Kiel 0-0 Hertha BSC: leaders' perfect start ends in stalemate
Bottom club Holstein Kiel held 2. Bundesliga leaders Hertha BSC to a goalless draw in round eight, ending Hertha's run of seven straight wins thanks to five saves from Weiner.
Hertha BSC's perfect start to the 2. Bundesliga season came to an end on Friday night as bottom club Holstein Kiel held the leaders to a 0-0 draw at the Holstein-Stadion. Stefan Leitl's side arrived with seven wins from seven games, and they created the better chances, with 14 shots, seven on target and 1.43 expected goals, but Kiel goalkeeper Weiner made five saves to secure a valuable point for Tim Walter's team in round eight. This match report covers the key moments, the statistics, the tactical picture and what the result means at both ends of the table.
Holstein Kiel vs Hertha BSC match report: Weiner shuts out the leaders
The pattern was set early. Hertha had more of the ball, finishing with 57% possession and 459 passes to Kiel's 350, while the hosts sat in a compact 4-5-1 and looked to frustrate. The first booking of the night went to Hertha full-back Deyovaisio Zeefuik on 34 minutes, and Kiel centre-back Sebastian Schonlau followed him into the book four minutes later. The first half ended goalless, with Kiel's defensive plan holding firm.
Walter reshuffled early after the break. Schonlau, already on a yellow card, was replaced by David Zec on 50 minutes, and the Kiel coach then made a double change on 64 minutes, sending on Ikem Ugoh and Gyan de Regt for Till Wiese and Guillermo Balzi. Zec was himself booked on 68 minutes as Hertha increased the pressure.
Leitl responded a minute later, introducing Jan Luca Schuler and Mads Valentin Pedersen for Sebastian Grønning and Julian Eitschberger, and then Farid Alfa-Ruprecht for Jón Dagur Þórsteinsson on 76 minutes. Hertha kept probing, winning seven corners in all against Kiel's one, but every time they found a way through, Weiner was equal to it. Kiel sent on Giorgi Kvilitaia and Mark Richter Montserrat on 82 minutes, and Hertha's last change, Soufian Gouram for Oluwaseun Adewumi, came on 89 minutes. Paul Seguin's late booking summed up a frustrating evening for the visitors.

Hertha more than doubled Kiel's shot count and their expected goals, and ten of their 14 attempts came from inside the penalty area. That would usually be enough to beat the bottom team in the division, but Weiner's five saves made the difference. Kiel's own threat was limited, with 0.61 xG and three shots on target, which Hertha goalkeeper Gersbeck dealt with. The hosts committed 18 fouls, a clear sign of how much defending they had to do, while the free-kick count (14 for Kiel, 17 for Hertha) reflects a stop-start contest.
Tactical analysis: Walter's 4-5-1 blunts Leitl's 4-2-3-1
Walter set up to defend. Weiner started behind a back four of Sekine, Madsen, Schonlau and Leon Parduzi, with a five-man midfield of Kaprálik, Balzi, Meffert, Wiese and Therkelsen and Harres alone up front. The five-man midfield crowded the central areas, and it largely worked: Hertha generated plenty of attempts, but their 1.43 xG from 14 shots points to few clear-cut openings.
Leitl stuck with the 4-2-3-1 that had won all seven of Hertha's previous league games. Gersbeck was in goal behind Eitschberger, Gechter, Kolbe and Zeefuik, with Seguin and Sessa in the double pivot. Adewumi, Þorsteinsson and Brekalo supported striker Grønning. Hertha's seven corners and 14 shots show they pinned Kiel back, but they lacked the final pass or finish to break the deadlock. Leitl's four substitutions between 69 and 89 minutes did not change the outcome.
Kiel's defensive resilience
Losing Schonlau early in the second half could have unsettled Kiel, especially with his replacement Zec booked soon after coming on. Instead, the reshaped back line held firm, and the clean sheet against a side that had scored 19 goals in seven games is the most encouraging aspect of Kiel's night.
2. Bundesliga table: Hertha's lead trimmed, Kiel still waiting for a win
Going into round eight, Hertha BSC led the 2. Bundesliga with a maximum 21 points from seven matches, having scored 19 goals and conceded eight. Holstein Kiel were 18th and last with four points from seven games: no wins, four draws and three defeats, with seven goals scored and 11 conceded.
- Hertha BSC after round eight: 22 points, W7 D1 L0, goals 19-8, goal difference +11, still unbeaten.
- Holstein Kiel after round eight: 5 points, W0 D5 L3, goals 7-11, goal difference −4.
Hertha remain unbeaten and on course at the top, but their 100% record is gone. Kiel's fifth draw of the season keeps them winless, yet a point against the leaders is the kind of result that can build belief.
