His latest strike opened the scoring in a 3-0 win at Anfield on 11 October, and he followed it with two more in a Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain three days later. This Erling Haaland profile looks at his season so far, his role under Maresca, the career that brought him to City, his honours and records, and what lies ahead.

Erling Haaland latest news: life after Guardiola

The biggest change at City this season is in the dugout. According to Wikipedia's 2026-27 Manchester City season page, Enzo Maresca was appointed on 29 June 2026 to succeed Pep Guardiola, the manager under whom Haaland won every major club trophy. The transition has not slowed the striker down. On 23 August he made his 200th appearance for the club in a 2-1 win over Bournemouth, and the goals have flowed ever since.

His long-term future is also settled. Haaland signed an extension in January 2025 that keeps him at City until 2034, per Wikipedia, making him the cornerstone of the new era at the Etihad.

Haaland's season so far: goals in every competition

After the Bournemouth milestone, Haaland scored twice in a 4-1 win at Crystal Palace on 28 August. September brought goals against Coventry on the 5th, a brace against Porto in the Champions League on the 8th, and further strikes against Manchester United on the 13th and Sunderland on the 20th, according to Wikipedia's season page.

The standout moment came on 11 October at Anfield. After Ryan Gravenberch was sent off, Haaland broke the deadlock in the 65th minute as City went on to beat Liverpool 3-0. According to Chase Your Sport, that goal gave him a record 14 Premier League away goals against "Big Six" clubs. Three days later he scored twice at home to Paris Saint-Germain, though City lost 4-2.

Haaland 2026-27 at a glance

  • Premier League goals: 6 (per Wikipedia).
  • All competitions: 10 goals (per Wikipedia).
  • Milestone: 200th City appearance, 23 August vs Bournemouth.
  • Champions League: two goals against Porto and two against PSG.
  • Record: 14 Premier League away goals against "Big Six" sides, according to Chase Your Sport.

City's form as a team has matched his. By the end-of-September international break they had won five straight league games and sat top of the Premier League, three points clear of Arsenal, according to Wikipedia.

Role and playing style

Haaland is the definitive modern centre-forward. Tall, powerful and remarkably quick for his size, he thrives on attacking space behind defensive lines and arriving in the six-yard box at exactly the right moment. His left foot is his main weapon, but he finishes with his right and his head too, and he rarely needs more than one touch to score.

He does not drop deep as often as some forwards; instead, his value lies in occupying centre-backs, pinning the defence and converting the chances his team-mates create. Under Maresca, City's structure still revolves around getting the ball into the penalty area where Haaland can strike, and the early-season numbers suggest that relationship is working.

Erling Haaland career path: Bryne to Manchester

Born on 21 July 2000 in Leeds, England, Haaland was raised in Bryne, Norway, where he began his career. A move to Molde led to the Austrian Bundesliga with Red Bull Salzburg, a breakthrough at Borussia Dortmund and, in summer 2022, a transfer to Manchester City.

Honours and records

Haaland's first season in England was historic. City won the treble of Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in 2022-23, and he set the Premier League single-season scoring record with 36 goals. He won another league title in 2023-24 and has claimed three Premier League Golden Boots, in 2022-23, 2023-24 and 2025-26.

On 2 December 2025 he reached 100 Premier League goals in only his 111th appearance, the fastest player ever to the mark. He also won the European Golden Shoe in 2022-23 and was named UEFA Men's Player of the Year in 2023. Earlier, he won the Austrian league and cup with Salzburg and the DFB-Pokal with Dortmund in 2021.

International career with Norway

Haaland is Norway's record goalscorer, and the 2026 World Cup finally gave him a stage to match his club achievements. According to Wikipedia, he scored seven goals as Norway reached the quarter-finals, their best-ever World Cup finish, before losing 2-1 to England after extra time. For a country that had not been a regular at major tournaments, it was a breakthrough summer with Haaland at its centre.

What's next for Haaland

With City top of the table in early autumn, the immediate goal is to keep pace in the title race with Arsenal and to recover from the PSG defeat in the Champions League. Every goal now adds to his growing list of Premier League records, and his contract until 2034 means City's new era under Maresca is being built around him. Haaland's scoring rate suggests another Golden Boot challenge is well under way.
